It was during the early phases of my exploration into the role of dreams in Islam that I found myself in a conversation that would anchor my entire research topic. I was speaking with a family acquaintance, a man deeply embedded in the Sufi landscape of Kerala, specifically a murid (disciple) following the Chishti lineage. We were discussing routine matters when, almost unintentionally, he let something slip.

Islamic law is often perceived as a set of rigid, timeless rules confined to books and scholarly debate. In reality, however, it is deeply entwined with everyday life. In early twentieth-century Yemen, legal texts, fatwas, court records, and doctrinal writings actively guided daily interactions, resolved disputes, and structured social relations. Judges, jurists, and ordinary people engaged with the law through writing, dialogue, and practice, making it a living, dynamic system rather than a static code.
