Ayesha Irani's The Muhammad Avatāra: Salvation History, Translation, and the Making of Bengali Islam (2021) offers a first-ever examination of a previously unknown early modern Muslim Bengali text. The book revolves around one such seventeenth-century Bengali epic, the Nabīvamśa, in vernacular Bengali composition by the Sufi hagiographer Saiyad Sultan, who recasts the Prophet Muhammad's life in vernacular Bengali.
